With floating offering so many positive benefits to well-being, health and mindfulness, it’s no wonder that this innovative treatment is gaining raving fans each day. Float therapy is truly one of the most popular services we offer at Feeling Groovy Wellness.
Here are 7 surprising things you never knew about flotation therapy and how it can help you.
1. Float tanks have been around awhile.
The first float tanks—then known as “sensory deprivation tanks”—were developed in the 1950s. A neuroscientist, Dr. John Lilly, pioneered research in the 1970s using sensory deprivation to study creativity, concentration and connection to others.
2. Floating is way more popular today than you might think!
The number of float tanks has skyrocketed from around 85 in 2011 to more than 350 today. Industry observers estimate around 1,000,000 floats took places in commercial float centers across North America in 2016.
3. Science backs up the benefits of float therapy.
A scientific study reported in the Journal of the International Society for Complementary Medicine Research in 2014 concluded that “stress, depression, anxiety, and worst pain were significantly decreased.” And, sleep quality and optimism increased. In the study, participants were treated with flotation during a 7-week period with a total of 12 flotation sessions of 45 minutes each.
4. Floating can improve a multitude of common symptoms.
Floating has a ton of benefits to your health. It helps lower cortisol levels and calm the nervous system, bringing the immune and hormonal systems back into balance. And, floating has been shown to improve symptoms of:
- Low energy and fatigue
- Chronic pain
- Muscle tension
- Jet lag
5. Everyone can float.
A float tank is filled with about 10 to 12 inches of water, and over 1,000 pounds of Epsom salts. Your body naturally floats—no matter what your weight or body type. The salt water is heated to near body temperature (around 96° F) so you won’t feel cold.
6. Magnesium provides extra benefits.
Epsom salts have a high concentration of magnesium. Magnesium helps to balance calcium levels and reduce blood pressure.
7. The feeling of floating is out of this world.
Many floaters equate the sensation of floating to the weightlessness an astronaut might feel in space. Others have deep meditative experiences, and others fall asleep.
You don’t have to go “total sensory deprivation” while in the tank. You can choose to have soft LED lighting and/or meditative music. Some floaters prop the tank lid open with a towel as well. And, there’s an intercom button to contact the front desk if you need assistance while in the tank.
Before you float, a Groovy team member will give you instructions on what to do before, during and after your float. You’ll take a shower before (and after) your float, and place ear plugs in your ears before entering the tank. Then you just float away!
