You’ve heard that facials are a great way to improve your skin and get that “glow” but you’re not sure if it will work for you. Or, you love getting facials but your skin is changing as you get older and you’re not getting the results you used to.
Either way, choosing a facial can be confusing, especially if you’re not sure what your skin needs right now.
To help put you at ease and get the most from your facial experience, here are five things to keep in mind the next time you book a facial.
1. Not all facials are created equal.
When you go to a café, it’s easy to choose something from the menu that sounds good. Choosing a facial might not be as easy, since different facials do different things.
Some facials are designed to cleanse, exfoliate, or heal your skin. Others may focus on nourishing skin or treating a specific condition like dryness or ageing.
At Feeling Groovy Wellness, every facial includes a personalized consultation, a complete treatment, and recommendations for follow up and home care.
“When a client comes in, I will look to see what the client needs,” says Feeling Groovy’s resident esthetician Rose Diaz. “I can then customize almost any treatment to suit a client’s skincare goal.”
A client may book one facial, but after her consultation, the esthetician may recommend another treatment, or even come up with a hybrid. For example, she might use the products from the Rose Facial with the technology of the microcurrent facial.
Or, if the client booked a facial for acne, but their concerns are really anti-ageing, Rose can make adjustments.
“I always explain what I’m recommending, and let the client decide what’s best for her,” adds Rose.
2. Plan ahead.
Timing your facial is important. Depending on your facial, your skin may be slightly inflamed for a day or two. Also keep in mind that as toxins and impurities are released through your skin, it may react (i.e. break out). That’s normal!
But that also means to take care when scheduling your facial. Don’t get a facial right before a big event, don’t get a facial right after waxing, or while using retinols.
3. Share your concerns with your esthetician.
Are you sensitive to a particular product? Are you concerned about lines and wrinkles? Do you wonder what to do about a dry patch of skin on your face?
“Sometimes I’ll see something that the client doesn’t even care about,” says Rose. “So I always take my cues from the client and her specific concerns.”
A licensed esthetician is a skincare expert who can answer many questions about your skin. Part of your appointment will be a pre-treatment consultation where your esthetician will ask you questions to find out your skincare goals and concerns. This is your time to be open about your concerns—no matter how small it might seem to you.
4. Come as you are.
Keep your home routine as usual. Don’t exfoliate like mad the day before, or change cleansers right before your facial. This will allow your esthetician to see your skin in its truest, most natural state, so she can make the best possible recommendations for your skin.
5. For best results, you do need more than one.
A facial is a fabulous, relaxing experience that will leave your skin better off than before you came in. However, just like one yoga class doesn’t make you fit for life, one facial won’t permanently change your skin. You will see some immediate results, of course. For more permanent improvement, the follow up is very important.
“A pro treatment is deeper,” says Rose, “but it does depend on what you do at home.”
At the end of your facial, your esthetician will suggest a regimen to follow at home, and will likely recommend getting on a regular schedule of professional facials. If you’ve ever had a facial at a spa where the last 15 minutes is a high-pressure sales presentation, don’t worry about that at Feeling Groovy.
“Because we are a holistic wellness center, we educate our client, so we will talk to you about caring for your skin” says Rose. “But, there’s never any pressure to buy anything. My goal is to help you have the healthiest, dewiest, glowiest skin.”
